English Requirements for International Students

English Language and Visa Requirements

One of the requirements for studying in Australia on a student visa, is the ability to demonstrate a sufficient level of English language proficiency.

For VISA purposes, the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test is the only test accepted by the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC).

Students Visa Regulations in Australia require International Students to take an IELTS test prior to lodging their application.

English Language and Course Entry

Australian educational providers set their own English requirements for course entry. Therefore, the IELSTS score needed for a student visa could be quite different to the IELSTS score required for course entry.

Students are advised to Contact their Australian education provider to determine the IELSTS score that is needed and the evidence that must be provided.

Arranging your English Test

To contact your nearest IELSTS testing office please head to the IELSTS Website

The IELSTS site also has a list of minimum scores that are required for entry into various organisations. As mentioned earlier, do check with your educational provider as well.

Finding an English Language Course

The National ELICOS Accreditation Scheme (NEAS) is Australia's official English language training accreditation system. It is internationally renowned as world's best practice in the regulation and quality assurance of English language tuition. Under NEAS, private and publicly funded institutions must meet the same rigorous standards.
